一些經過時間思考仍粗略的想法

數學是可以表現出接近完美的形式,非常的純粹,可以很美,極度單純而複雜.

進了政治大學應用數學系,沒能學透也沒能精通,但卻讓見識到了甚麼是數學,現在回想是件很幸福的事.第一學期的第一堂課是的微積分,教授是蔡隆義,完全的被這門課吸引,無窮與無限逼近的觀念仍歷歷在目.另個教授,過了十五年,到了舊金山,參觀了加州大學柏克萊分校,才知道陳天進教授所念的這所學校是這麼了不起,深感自己是井底之蛙.

然而在學數學的那段時間,有件特別有趣的事,數學看似甚麼都能質疑,然後加以證明,進而理解,所有的疑問似乎都能追根究柢,毫無掩飾的表現,但是到了最根本的那層,質疑還可以被證明嗎? "1"是甚麼? "+"是甚麼 1+1=2這是甚麼嗎? 數學有些根本上的元素不適合被質疑也沒有適合方法證明,如果最基礎的元素被質疑,所有的建構都是虛無.

藝術是圍繞著人而產生的,數學是個很好的借鏡,釐清甚麼是建構我們所創作藝術的根本元素或許是一個能導向學習藝術很好的方法. 物理面,人類普遍擁有著對稱與些微的不對稱;普遍平衡的身體; 一對可以奔跑和投擲的雙臂; 靈巧的手與不可思議的五感等,在感性面,負面的分別是暴食、色欲、貪婪、忌妒、暴怒、懶惰、驕傲及傲慢這西方七原罪,或是七情六慾喜、怒、哀、懼、愛、惡、慾, 色欲、形貌欲、威信姿態欲、言語音聲欲、細滑欲、人想欲等等都可說是身為人最基本的,都是渴求的,如果質疑這些,那還存在些甚麼? 由這來反證, 脫離這些最基本建構人的元素,那產物的存在價值是很有爭議的.

最讓人不願意見到的就是質疑自己是人這件事.

剛搬到舊金山的那幾天,左邊的音樂盒掉在車庫被車壓過去,已經轉不動也撥不出聲音了,右邊的應該是山貓的頭骨,在幾年前於北邊黃石公園入口處的一家印地安人商店買的,因為破損,用了7元美金購買下來.

I did one thing which I think it fun to try. I mixed with a photo of my oil paintings, and I think it create some nice texture and some nice color blend which is hard to get with Photoshop brush.

ASUS EEE Note meets Auguste Rodin

This was done with Asus EEE Note EA800 which has 8 inch gray scale LCD, Linux based system , and Wacom Pen with pressure sensitivity.

Sadly, ASUS didn't continue to advance this product which I though has a lot of potential, and it only costs 230 US Dollars. Current version the hardware was great, but the software support is weak.

I did these drawings from last weekend when I visited Legion of Honor. They have some really good collections in the museum, and I found out Rodin has some of the best composition pieces in this museum.

Energy/Fresh/Raw
This is one of my early Paintings with digital medium from observation with life model.

Every time when I started with new subjects and new media, it always contains more energy and felt fresh. His name is Bob and he lives with her daughter in Seattle now. Later on, I invited him for another painting session.

Rembrandt van rijn

Currently there are not many good quality photos of Rembrandt's paintings online, and I felt these are good photos to share.

These photos were taken from MAT in 2010/05, and his paintings always make me stay here for a while, and his paintings shows the perfection of technique in the whole time.

This tree quarter lighting was what Rembrandt used for most of his portrait paintings, and how he handle the shadow is just amazing.

It is also fun to look at how artists today approach different types of portrait paintings like Lucian Freud, Chuck Close, and many others after seeing 400 years old master paintings.

Most of these species are extinct and only one-modern Home sapiens- ultimately survived.

在繪畫上,為什麼線條這麼有效率,還有線條為什麼這麼快速的可以達到效果?
為何一條細線可以體現物體的立體感?
實際上畫本身並不會發光,某些畫作上卻讓人覺得發光的感覺.
光影遞減和物體受光的關係,在畫作上的轉化與呈現,這些都是特別有趣可以深入探討的.

光的遞減與距離的關係並不是線性遞減的,而是平方的遞減.
假設光源在右邊, 圖一中上圖表現的比較接近實際光源的遞減,而圖一底下是線性的遞減.
依照這明度分布:
一幅完整光影的畫,包含了發光體與影子,普遍來說,其中明度較高的50%的變化區域集中在10~25%的面積之中,這代表大多數的面積的明度都相對於整體都是呈現較接近的且都是明度較低的,而描繪高光就顯得特別的重要. 這說明著想在一幅畫中表現出光感,明度的分布方面,多數的面積以明度較低的色彩去表現,在小面積上集中使用明度高且變化較大的色彩. 在400年前, Georges de La Tour, 和Rambrandt Harmenszoon van Rijn就應用在畫作上,而且技巧之高明,就算現代仍是難以超越,但就理論上而言,這種類似的光影感覺是可以建構出來的,不過這只是單純光的遞減,立體物體受光角度在平面上畫作上的明度遞減更不是線性的.

There is much Chinese folklore which includes songs, and tales, and it tells stories of historical, human nature, events, or love. Here is a story about Daji and King Zhou of Shang in 1047 BC. Daji was a favorite concuibine of King Zho of Shang. She is a classic example of how beauty causes the downfall of an empire/dynasty in Chinese culture. She is portrayed as an evil fox spirit in Chinese novel Fengshen Yanyi which is translated as The Investiture of the Gods or The Creation of the Gods, also known as Fengshen Bang.

妲己，殷紂之妃也。紂伐有蘇，有蘇女以妲己，美而辯，用心邪僻，夸比於禮，戚施於貌。紂好酒淫樂，不離妲己，其言是從，所譽者貴之，憎者誅之。

乃使師延作朝歌北鄙之音，北里之舞，靡靡之樂。造鹿臺為瓊室玉門，其大三里，高千尺，七年乃成。厚賦稅，以實鹿臺之財，盈鉅橋之粟，燎焚天下之財，罷苦萬民之力。故狗馬奇物，充牣宮室，以人食獸，廣沙丘苑臺，以酒為池，懸肉為林，男女裸相逐於其間。宮中九市，為長夜之飲。百姓怨望，諸侯有叛者。妲己以為罰輕誅薄，故威不立，乃重為刑辟，為熨斗，以火燒燃，使人舉之手爛，更為銅柱以膏塗之，加於炭火之上，使有罪緣之。紂與妲己，以為大樂，名曰炮烙之刑。

贈與,分享,盜取和道德信仰

這幾個名詞看似有不同的意義和詮釋,實際上的意義卻比字面上來的複雜的多.
又與宗教信仰與道德文化牽扯不清.

思想被盜,這是個普遍的形容,但觀念與思想被某人觀察及了解後導致了某人衍生的行為而感覺自己權益受到損害的這觀念實際上是甚麼時候開始產生的?
被盜者如果沒有意識到或是有意識而無感覺到傷害,這算是盜嗎?
了解這樣的模式而善於利用這觀念的人我們怎麼說?
被盜者若是當下沒意識,而在某些時間後意識到而不悅這樣的事件發生,那又能怎麼做?
而更深入的探討這些問題,只會發現一切都陷入泥沼,然後呢?

這裡有一些例子:

#病毒疫苗與病毒的傳播與地球村
#寵物,結紮,和動物避難所
#車子.安全帶與安全座椅,罰款
#聖誕節(情人節......等),買禮物,收禮物
#砍樹種植草皮,空調與清掃落葉及除草機

#富裕,機器與傭人,健康與健身房
#美國綠卡,受欺壓的外國員工與美國本土員工失業
#著作權起源保護卻讓公司操弄這觀念而從中獲利,於是演變出更複雜的著作權法,然後有著更大的獲利.

......

這類荒謬卻又是實際生活的事情太多太多了.
這些在人類過去的歷史上都發生過,而衍生了道德與信仰存在的必要性,否則人該怎麼走?

Recently, there was one digital painting I have done was labeld as "Computer generated". I believed the term of "generated" was not the correct way to describ a painting.

There is a good way of describing the meaning of a painting and I believed this is why people put this in Wikipedia.

Painting is the practice of applying paint, pigment, color or other medium[1] to a surface (support base). The application of the medium is commonly applied to the base with a brush but other objects may be used. In art the term describes both the act and the result which is called a painting......

Photoshop V.S Oil Painting??

I did one in 2009 and even they were not great paintings but worth to think about it.
I did the digital paintings in one of the session and use it as an guide for the oil painting, and than bring the oil painting for the second session.

They all have their own characteristics.
I don't think it make a lot of sense to compare like this way but it may answer some of the questions which bother me or other artists for a long time.

The answer was if we like the feel of the oil painting, than go ahead to do an oil painting.
If we like the feel of Photoshop painting, than go ahead to do Photoshop painting.

As an artist today, I believe it is our job to figure what is the digital media means to us.

麒麟是中國古代神話傳說中的神獸，據說能活兩千年。雄的名麟，雌的名麒，合稱麒麟。性情溫和，不傷人畜，不踐踏花草，故稱為仁獸。

麒麟的形似馬，狀比鹿，尾似牛尾。麒有獨角，麟無角，口能吐火，聲音如雷。中國古代用麒麟象徵祥瑞。相傳只在太平盛世，或世有聖人時此獸才會出現，亦作騏驎。

Flame Kirin:

Kirin is a mythical beast in Chinese culture.
The creature is supposed to be more like horse or deer body with scales and more than two horns but I want it to be more aggressive so I change the body type to be more strong with claw.
It also says the tail is more like bull's tail and can blow fire from the mouth.

Current Show_2009 Western Regional Exhibition

This time is in Seattle Area, and the gallery is one of my favorite galleries around here. I always see some good oil paintings in this gallery. I am happy to be part of the show and hope I can continue it!

Always work in this year, and didn't get much chance to draw and paint digitally.
This is one of the few digital paintings which I did in this year, and was glad to get in and had full page in this EXOTIQUE 5.

The Left upper is Kekai Kotaki's painting_Concept Artist Lead in GW Team.

I was managing some old photos, and saw these pictures which I like.

以一個跨度較大的方式來看這些舊照片,發現因為相機特性,拍的主題和構圖也往往受牽連著,這台相機前置作業比較多,因此拍攝時特別注意各種細節,畫面往往四平八穩,構圖均衡,而且人物主體的照片也比較少.色彩偏向平淡樸實.

Kodak 14n是留最久的相機,也是最多問題的相機,不僅有在強光下會有紅暈,還有對某些鏡頭會產生左右色彩不均的問題.不過同時的,曝光良好的情況,照片品質大概是目前用過的相機裡成像最好的. 今天回頭看了2004年拍的照片,有一些比較喜歡的照片,挑了幾張放了上來.

I usually paint 16X20 for this type of subjects, and if I paint smaller, I only do head study. This is first time I paint figure in 9X12 canvas.

At begining, I just wanted to have fun but still end up trying hard to make it looks like something.

台灣動畫的期許

動畫和所有行業一樣,得根本去欣賞起,什麼是台灣本身特有的美,自然,水,空氣,人文,地理,歷史,這些都不需要動畫就可以去體驗和表現,當每個人都有了共識,動畫的品質自然就相對的提高.
看看台灣三義的木雕,全世界有多少地方可以生產出那樣有氣勢和闊度的作品,看看鎮瀾宮,或三峽祖師廟,目前所有在Zbrush論壇上的作品和這些木雕一比,不過都是小孩子作品.
台灣有絕對足夠的能力和資源去生產世界級的動畫,問題在於最根本的教育和自我體驗.
這些都是在國民基本教育上面就應該著手的,由這個點再去思考學校的教學,和體制,老師的體制,結構.德智體群美....整個教育過程中,台灣的教育少很多面向. 我最感概的在於一直喜歡的美術和體育都不是被重視的,美術是設計人物場景,表現美最根本的一環.體育和電影遊戲動畫息息相關,了解牽一髮動全身,了解自己身體所有關節和肌肉和心理連結的那份感覺,要發展好動畫,一個環節都不能少.而且是從小開始,更不是速成的.

考慮台灣目前能替世界做出怎樣代表性的作品,這樣的格局才有可能在世界上有一立足地,任何偉大的成就都不光光是單一個人單一事件造成的. 小有小的美,大有大的美,重要的在於我們有沒有想跟其他人分享的經驗或是世界上任何一個角落都感受不到的絕佳經驗,在台灣發生著.

我們只能去製造一個良好的環境給台灣發產出良好的動畫,而不是帶領著大家走到一個我們也不知道哪的地方.

知識好比貝殼,悲痛好比細砂,當人生經歷越豐富,外殼也就越來越厚,細砂也成了五彩的珍珠,貝殼越來越美,越來越繁複,也越看不清楚,當想開了脫殼而出看個清楚,也變成最後一次的看到真實自己.
留下來的是數不清的貝殼紋路與珍珠令人著迷的色彩.

琴棋書畫.言語.文字.網路.電腦如橋梁或觸手.
當我們設法把所有精力發揮在這些工具,想去了解奇蹟,到頭來找尋的其實是人本身. 人的歷史裡重複的印證這些,但人總是得重複走過一樣的路去體驗,然後紀錄下來給下一代.
受感動,感動,到頭來都是因為我們是人

Instruments, chess, books, paintings, brushes, internet, and computers are all bridges that connect the real feelings between humans. We spend all our life time to build these tools and enhance it. She was a very good model. Holding poses really well and for the last one hour, the second session she went back to exactly same pose right away.
For drawings I try a new Faber Castell charcoal pencil(Medium).
It gives me much smooth shading than regular compressed charcoal.

Nowadays everything shift fast and people look for something new rather than something lasts longer. Good or Bad? Time became fragment and for what we could do is limited.
In an hour, I won't be able to finish a oil so I did this one hour digital painting.

昨晚的Model非常的好,不只動作好,連最後一個小時長時間的動作,都可以回到一模一樣的動作.這次試了新的炭筆,比起一般的炭筆更可以畫出連續色調,不過因為蕊心比較小,對於大的畫面不太容易.

有關零碎的時間與創作形式

5分鐘:可以攝影或速寫,這是我認為最快速的創作方式.
10分鐘:可以速寫.
一個小時:可以完整素描,如果是彩色,水彩也是好的媒材,但油畫就相對困難,有太多的步驟不易簡化,如今電腦可以做到局部,完整的上色,但問題是只能在室內,顯示屏幕的發展對戶外強光仍沒有好的解決方案,但有些數位創作的畫家做到了戶外寫生,而且都在短時間內完成.
三個小時:是基本油畫創作的最底線,前後準備工具,實際作畫可能少於兩個小時.

生活總是這樣的,人生而是群居,孤立生活最終導致的是一灘不流動的水.
在整個環境變遷和人們價值關連續改變下,有人的想領導大眾,走向各別的理想大地,有人是隨波逐流,不管如何都是得改變. 在改變的情況下,人都還是有情感抒發與寄託.
這是上面這張一小時的數位人體的由來.也是感嘆個人創作時間零碎和短暫.

A Still Life Painting_Cherry

These cherries dropped this morning.

I taped it on a canvas and painted this.

Since I try to mimic the traditional way which I will do with oil painting, I did this one with two brushes, two layers, and eyeball to select color without UNDO in Photoshop.

今早出門時在院子撿了這剛從樹上掉下的櫻桃, 正在欣賞這只有短暫壽命的櫻桃,決定將這美捕捉下來,於是用紙膠貼到油畫布,畫了這張.
在電腦裡開了一張約20吋的畫布,因為想模擬傳統畫法,畫的過程只使用兩個筆刷,兩個圖層,背景色和前景的櫻桃,以及用肉眼選色,也完全避免UNDO.

書裡是這麼寫的.

最近看書才發現原來這個我熟知的大樹是這麼不一樣,他的所在位置在奧林匹克國家公園. 幾乎每次去那邊都會拜訪這棵大樹,看過很多的大樹,特別喜歡這棵,非常的與眾不同另外也介紹一本跟樹有關的書籍,叫做Remarkable Trees of the World.

第一張照片是從樹洞裡往上拍攝的, 別有洞天大概就是這意思吧.

一個星期中的星期一,到了山上彈琴畫畫,路上遇到隻大貓,驚覺不對,動作和體型都和家貓不太一樣,停了車細看,才知道是山貓,體型大約70~100公分,比家貓大了一到兩倍. 生平第一次在野外遇到貓科動物.

數位繪畫與傳統媒材有本質上的差異,不過單純以傳統面來體驗電腦繪畫的感覺,差異性慢慢的拉近.

真正開始在電腦上作畫是這兩三年來的事情,一直強迫自己適應這樣的新媒體,總是感覺不對,慢慢的發現只能調適出適合在電腦上作畫的方式,很多過去依賴的技法不能直接轉移.

在傳統媒材比如碳筆或鉛筆或是油畫,都相當依賴筆觸和一些意外的筆刷效果,但在數位繪畫上面一直都無法體驗到這種感覺,總是生硬.

今晚用了新的數位板第一回感受到舒適的筆刷與筆觸,輕到重,沒有突兀的不連續感.也是第一回畫完一幅畫,不覺得手有負擔.

Usually I won't follow exactly like the setting, I changed the color of the background, or change color of the clothes, or sometimes I even change lighting.
This time I try to follow what is over there and want to capture the color.
I also use the color of the Canvas itself and didn't paint over the it.

一般很少完全依照Setting畫,總是會有一些不喜歡的元素,這次仔細的觀察,並且小心的描繪顏色,然而三個小時總是有限,膚色還有很多層次沒有表現出來.Pigeon是這次的Model,他來回看了兩次,最後離開前又看了一次,很高興她也喜歡這畫.

Forest in Hamlin Park (Lost)

很遺憾的上面這張Foresr in Hamlin Park 不見了,原來畫太小也有這問題.

這次西雅圖的大雪是繼1990以來最嚴重的,很慶幸的政府投下不少心力,高速公路總是順暢,但是在小街小巷口積雪狀況嚴重的多,有很多車在住家前面動彈不得.

還有不少樹木被雪壓斷壓垮,門前的紫丁香也是受害之一,在這次大雪之下,承受不住重量應聲折斷.

下次在長回這樣的大小可能是20年之後了.

Hamlin Park是這附近的一個森林公園,裡頭的森林氣息在現在的都會城市生活裡不多見,希望這片森林可以永久的在這邊成長下去.

有很多的景色是沒辦法形容,甚至是無法描繪或是拍攝捕捉,那種的氣氛除了在現場,沒有別的方式能夠重新呈現,甚至是得經過某些特有的過程之後,特定的時間點和光線,才能感受的, 而這很難用詞與去代表, 硬要搭個字上去, 那可能是美. 並不見得是鮮豔,強烈或是誇飾.平淡中帶有的變化品嘗起來更是印象深刻,那早上海邊的感覺就像是那樣.

有幾張比較不同以往的拍攝手法,是比較經營過的攝影.

Kodak Camera has a very useful tool that it can stitch 3 photos into one photo, and I like it so much since there is no need to use any computer software to make panoramic photo.

Kodak Z系列相機有個很有用的功能,目前也只有Kodak有做,相機內合併三張照片,省去很多後製的功夫,這邊有幾張在Olympic National Park拍的照片.

After wonderful Mushashi Sushi, we went to coffee shop and meet their friend.
Recently, I am thinking about turning a old notebook and a 4X5 Wacom into a Custom TabletPC.
I was doing a battery test over there and the battery only ran 40 minutes with full charge.

在Wallingford結束了愉快的壽司晚餐,到了兩條街旁的巧克力咖啡館見他們朋友Mika,坐在二樓的高腳椅上,旁邊有兩盞約70年代的檯燈,裝飾與燈光都非常獨特,保有過去一些美國老街的味道,他們遇到朋友後交換照片和聊天.
而最近腦袋中有個點子想把舊的筆記本電腦和4X5數位板手整合在一起,在那測試電池,遺憾的電池只持續四十分鐘,若要執行這計畫,得先把電池的問題解決,畫是在這樣的情況下產生的.

立體感,樹皮,人體皮膚.建築物的表現?

ㄧ些幾年來畫畫的感想.

畫畫其中一個很有趣的就是在平面上面表現立體感.(錯覺)
立體感有兩個大元素構成,一個是透視,一個是明暗.
要畫出立體感,這兩個元素必須掌握得非常精準.

另外樹枝.建築物.人體膚色,這些都是日常生活中很常接觸的,一般而言越熟悉的越是難以表現,
稍有錯誤就會感到不舒服.
另一點是人在生活中太依賴文字與"圖示化"的生活.
比如看到一個椅子.並不會認真去研究那椅子的形狀.顏色.光影,或是哪有瑕疵,在人腦中不過就是個符號和"樣子",從此只要遇到那椅子就會自動以符號代替.

要畫出寫實,第一就是得打破過去的認知,重新看待所有能見到的,最根本處,所有視覺上的都是顏色和明暗去組成.也不需要刻意的去想透視或是任何規則理論.
這也就是有人能把畫倒著畫.因為打破那些腦裡建立的舊有規則之後,畫不管哪個角度都是能欣賞的.

然而從這角度去觀察,樹枝.建築物.人的皮膚......等等,都是可以直接描寫,各別間並沒有特殊之處,也就沒有難易之分了,只要多練習都一定可以掌握.

在描繪形體能力之上.有表現力.感情.動機......等等,這些就是構成好畫的元素,而這些都是因人而異,有些是與生活環境有關或是與生俱來的.

The only way to capture the color is do it from life.

Although the fog and color kept changing, I am glad I got it in about 1 hour .

Hope I will get time to develop it to a larger painting soon.

唯一能捕捉顏色的方式就是從現場,目前的數位相機捕捉的過程經過太多的轉換,可以很容易的創造"美麗"的相片,但顏色往往失去真實度.

這次帶了油畫工具找到了機會使用,過程中顏色和雲霧一直變化,幸運的在一個小時左右把需要的顏色畫了下來,希望接下來幾天有機會能發展成較大的一幅畫.

Have three paintings in this show, and went to the reception of the show.

I knew some of famous artists before I went there, but this is the first time I talk to them in person, besides there are two original Pino's paintings. The small one is fantastic.

Kevin Beilfuss _ I love his works when I saw it and the original is far better than the web image.
Molly Schmid _ Richard Schmid's Daughter, from the paintings I can totally feel she is the daughter of Richard Schmid. She got same cool brush strokes like his father.
Hsin-Yao Tseng _ A very young 22 years old talent artist from Taiwan.
Ignat Ignatov _ I knew him from the art magazine, and was lucky to talk to him in the show.

上星期本來想放棄了......臉沒畫好,膚色太紅,馬尾幾乎頂到邊緣,沒有衣服裝飾.
這周同個動作又試了一次,這回並不打算完成臉,但把馬尾改了,除此膚色整個重畫過,動作也調整了一下.
這次忘了帶Painting Mediums,跟?Lora借了Turpentine,以前沒用Turpentine畫過,發現除了洗筆,其實拿來當Painting Mediums也還不錯.
